Strengthening the competencies of lawyers, supporting the evolution of the legal profession, and promoting new areas of practice: this remains one of the key priorities of the Cameroon Bar Association!
Pursuant to the Framework Cooperation Agreement signed on 11 April 2026 between the Cameroon Bar Association, represented by the President of the Bar (the Batonnier), and the Mediation and Arbitration Centre of GECAM (CMAG), represented by the Chairman of its Permanent Committee, a high-level training programme on the Practice of Corporate Secretarial Services for Boards of Directors and General Meetings was held on 14 and 15 July 2026.
This initiative forms part of the Cameroon Bar Association’s commitment to providing its members with practical, business-oriented training programmes that respond to the evolving needs of companies while encouraging the diversification of legal practice.
The training was delivered by Dr Dieudonné PIIH, Barristers Serges Martin Zangue, and Joel Noussie of Zangue & Partners, and covered a wide range of practical and legal issues relating to corporate governance, including:
- the organisation and legal management of meetings of Boards of Directors and General Meetings;
- the preparation and conduct of meetings of corporate bodies;
- the drafting of minutes and the management of governance-related incidents;
- post-meeting legal formalities, including filings with the Trade and Personal Property Credit Register (RCCM);
- and best practices in corporate governance.
The strong participation of lawyers and advocates in training clearly demonstrates the growing interest of the legal profession in these areas of practice and reflects the willingness of members of the Cameroon Bar Association to broaden their expertise in response to the needs of businesses and institutions.
At the conclusion of the programme, several forward-looking initiatives were discussed, including the establishment of a Club or Circle of Lawyers specialising in Corporate Governance and Corporate Secretarial Practice, with a view to promoting knowledge-sharing, developing recognised expertise, and fostering professional specialisation in these fields.
Participants also encouraged the Cameroon Bar Association to continue its ongoing reflections towards the establishment of a dedicated framework recognising lawyers as the preferred professionals to perform the functions of Company Secretary, having regard to their legal expertise and ingenuity, professional ethics, and central role in ensuring sound corporate governance and legal compliance.
Through initiatives such as this, the Cameroon Bar continues to equip its members with the knowledge and practical skills required to diversify their professional practice, strengthen their expertise, and position themselves in areas of high added value for businesses, public institutions, and the wider economy.
