New start for Douala Lawyers

The Lawyers of the Littoral Region responded favorably to the convocation of the Representative of the Bar President of Douala, on Wednesday August 24, 2022 in the banquet hall of Queen’s Park. The meeting focused on the conditions of exercise of their profession and possible solutions to address the difficulties encountered. For this purpose, the Bar President, the Secretary, the Treasurer of the Bar and the Representative of the Bar President for the Central, Southern and Eastern Regions honored us with their presence.

Following the welcoming protocol by the Representative of the Bar President for the Littoral, the exchanges continued around eight essential points, the most important of which dealt with the difficulties encountered by the Lawyers of Douala in the exercise of their functions. A self-criticism and the communications denounced, among others, the catastrophic state of the relations with the Magistrates, the difficulty related to the meeting of the Presidents of the Courts of Appeal, the high and varying cost of the extracts of the plumitifs, the linguistic difficulties and the unwritten decisions. Internally, the lawyers decried the absence of sanctions in the face of the non-respect of the norms of the exercise of the profession, the complicity of certain lawyers in the bad treatment suffered by their colleagues and the dress of the lawyer.

Several proposals were made to overcome these difficulties, among which: a greater firmness of the Representative of the Bar President, the responsibility of the elders, frequent visits of the Representative to the court house and to the offices, the setting up of a platform for interprofessional exchanges and the meeting of the Heads of jurisdictions.

The meeting continued with the sensitization of the Bar Secretary to the lawyers on the importance of subscribing to the insurance offered by Activa, the Bar’s partner in this matter. The Bar Treasurer informed the audience about the work that is being done to offer lawyers easier ways to pay their monthly dues.

After these different interventions, the Bar President thanked the colleagues of Douala for their welcome and for the frankness of their remarks. He reassured the audience about all the measures taken by the Bar Council to improve the conditions of exercise of the profession of Lawyer in the Littoral, but also in the whole country. He also advised that discipline remains a priority in the case of non-compliance with the law and the ethics of the corporation.

The meeting ended at 9 pm around a meal offered for the occasion with the 400 Lawyers who came to take part in this meeting.
